Morristown Teen is 3rd Arrest in Summit Beating Death

Nigel Dumas, 19, was taken into custody Friday, July 23.

An aspiring R&B singer from Morristown is now the third teen charged with manslaughter by Union County prosecutors in the beating death of a 47-year-old Summit man.

Police arrested Nigel Dumas, 19, of Morristown, Friday night for his alleged role in the attack, Union County Prosecutor Theodore J. Romankow said. Dumas was arrested around 7:20 p.m. in Morristown and is being held in the Union County jail on $100,000 bail.

The attack was apparently videotaped by a person at the scene—the footage has been aired on ABC news—but authorities say Dumas was not the person behind the camera.

"Evidence has now pointed to this person playing a role in this crime," authorities with the prosecutor's office said. "We've had detectives really working on this the last couple of days."

Dumas—who goes by the stage name Robby Guarantee—is the latest person to be arrested in connection with the death of Abelino Mazariego. Investigators believe Mazariego was on a bench in the promenade off of Springfield Avenue in Summit on July 17 around 9:25 p.m. when he was approached by a group of teenagers, Romankow said. At least some of the teens then allegedly attacked Mazariego, causing him serious injury.

Mazariego, who had left his job as a dishwasher at a nearby Indian restaurant a few hours earlier, was transported to Overlook Hospital and died on Tuesday at approximately 6 p.m., having never regained consciousness. It appears to be an unprovoked attack and the case remains under investigation, Romankow said.

According to one of Dumas' two Facebook pages using his Robby Guarantee name, he was slated to perform in Morristown on Aug. 7.

"I definitely cannot imagine him doing anything like this," his booking agent, George Clapps, said Friday night. "He's been raised in a good household."

Clapps, who first met Dumas two years ago while they attended Calvary Baptist Church in Morristown, said the crime doesn't fit his client's character.

"If anything, the only thing I can see is that he was with the wrong crowd at the wrong time," Clapps said, speculating Dumas could have been at the scene of the incident, but not involved directly. "You get accused—everyone gets the same charge."

According to several athletics websites, a Nigel Dumas ran track for Morristown High School in recent years. Clapps said the 2010 graduate—whom he described as a "kind-hearted, open-minded individual"—loves basketball and other sports as well.

"He just wants to be successful in life. ... This is completely out of left field," Clapps said.

Two other suspects, teenagers from Summit, were identified and arrested earlier this week in connection with the case. Eighteen-year-old Khayri Williams-Clark and a 17-year-old juvenile whose name has not been disclosed were taken into custody and are being held in Union County.

"I just hope everybody that was involved is prosecuted to the full extent of the law," said Summit Mayor Jordan Glatt on Friday night. "It doesn't matter where these kids are from. I just want to see these guys brought to justice."

Williams-Clark is being held on $100,000 bail. His waived his right to appear at his arraignment Friday morning.
