Police: Man Said He Stole DVD Player Because 'It's Nice'

A Morristown man admitted stealing a brand-new DVD player from his neighbors, said.

Officer Jermaine Marbley responded to a Western Avenue residence on report of a stolen DVD player that had been delivered by mail on Feb. 17, police said.

The woman who complained about the stolen merchandise said she had followed the package's tracking number to her residence, but the package was not there, police said. She told Marbley she believed her neighbor, 52-year-old Patrick McGuire, took the DVD player, police said.

When Marbley went up to McGuire's room to ask if he had seen any packages recently, McGuire said, "No, officer, I didn't steal anything," according to a police report. When Marbley said he was not accusing McGuire of stealing the DVD player, McGuire said, "No, I honestly have not seen anything," according to the police report.

Then Marbley looked beyond McGuire and saw an open Panasonic DVD player box with wires sticking out of it, police said. When McGuire realized he was caught, he said, "OK, officer, you got me, I took the DVD player. But, what do you want me to do, it's a nice DVD player and I don't like those girls anyway," referring to his neighbors, the police report said.

McGuire was arrested and charged with theft. The DVD player was recovered, photographed and returned to its owner, police said.
