Police: Reported Burglaries on the Rise in Morristown

Officials call for "a strong united community."

The Morristown Police Department on Friday issued a statement acknowledging a sharp increase in the number of reported residential burglaries throughout the town.

"The Bureau of Police is working diligently with citizens and neighborhood associations in order to investigate these crimes and is asking for public assistance in these matters," said Capt. Steven Sarinelli in the release. "The investigations into this activity [are] ongoing and the Bureau of Police is working with the Morris County Prosecutor's Office Burglary Task Force as well as with all surrounding agencies."

Residents are asked to increase their awareness within their neighborhoods and should report all suspicious activity or unknown persons to police immediately. "A simple call to report a suspicious
person could prevent a burglary to your residence or the home of your neighbor," Sarinelli said. "Basic crime prevention
methods should be used at all times including ensuring all doors and windows are secured and locked, keeping exterior or motion-sensing lights active and asking neighbors to watch over each other. The
best defense is a strong united community."
