Police: Thief Threatened to Kill Self With Keys

The following arrest information was supplied by the Morristown Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

A woman who was shoplifting from threatened to kill herself with her car keys after she was caught, Morristown police said.

Police arrested and charged Bonita Hiner, 56, of Lake Hopatcong, with theft at 2:20 p.m. Oct. 3, after employees of reported to police that they saw Hiner shoplifting via security camera, police said.

When security officers confronted Hiner and searched her purse, they found five pairs of stolen earrings and one pair of gloves, total value $108.82, according to police reports. Police were told that Hiner, while in custody at the store, threatened to commit suicide by cutting her wrists with car keys, police said.

Hiner told the arresting officer that she had just started a new medication to treat her bi-polar disorder and "was not feeling right," according to the incident report filed by Morristown police.

She was later transported to for observation for "suicidal thoughts," according to the report.
