Police: Woman Forged $24K in Checks

The following arrest information was supplied by the Morristown Police Department. It does not indicate a conviction.

Morristown police say a Newark resident who was an employee at a Morristown office forged nearly $24,000 in checks in her employer's name before being caught by the employer's bank.

Police arrested and charged Latisa Bell, 33, of Newark, of fraud on Nov. 21 after being called to on North Park Place, where the employer said Bell had forged two of her checks and deposited them into Bell's account, according to a police report.

The bank employee told police a total of 13 checks had been deposited by Bell there, from as little as $795.90 to as much as $4076.59, according to the report. All the checks, except one made out to Bergenfield Borough for $2625.97, were made out to the Federal National Mortgage Association, according to the report, totalling $23,528.97.

All the checks had Bell's name written or typed on them, according to the report.

The employer and police went to the victim's place of employment on Bank Street later and confronted Bell, who admitted having stolen and forged the checks and deposited them into her Chase Bank account, according to the report.

She was immediately fired from her job and arrested and charged by police with one count of theft, according to the report.

She was later released of her own recognizance because she had no one to care for her children, according to the report.
