Spring Street Closed for Fear of Commercial Building Collapsing More

Building officials say heavy rainstorm could impact already deficient structure.

Morristown Police have closed Spring Street between Speedwell Avenue and Martin Luther King Avenue Friday afternoon for fear of a building there collapsing beyond its damage from Thursday.

"Construction officials are concerned that the heavy rain we are about to experience could cause the damaged structure at 115 Spring Street to further collapse," Lt. Stuart Greer said in an email. "Out of a concern for vehicle and pedestrian safety, the decision was made to close the roadway until this strong rain storm passes."

Piled, heavy snow forced the roof at 115 Spring Street to collapse Thursday morning. The building was vacant, but a search for pedestrians potentially inside the structure was needed. No one was hurt or injured as a result of the incident.

Greer said he he suspects traffic delays will be a result of the closure, but wants to ensure everyone is safe.
