2010 Census: Morristown Housing Vacancies Double

Total unoccupied units climbed from 363 to 755.

According to data released Thursday by the U.S. Census Bureau, the number of unoccupied housing units in Morristown rose by 108 percent over 10 years, rising from 363 to 755 unoccupied units.

While the total number of available housing units rose by over 7 percent, from 7,615 to 8,172, both "homeowner" and "rental" vacancy rates saw large increases from 2000 to 2010. Homeowner vacancy rates saw the biggest jump, of over 208 percent, from 1.2 of available housing stock, to 3.7. Rental vacancies rose 127 percent, from 3.7 to 8.4.

By comparison, the number of occupied units in Morristown over the same time rose only by 2.3 percent, from 7,252 to 7,417.

At the time of the 2010 census, vacancies broke down as follows:

  • 420 units for rent
  • 16 units rented but not occupied
  • 109 units for sale
  • 14 units sold but not occupied
  • 97 unoccupied seasonal, recreational or occasional units 
  • 99 other vacancies
