Letter: Legislative Elections Important, Too

Denville resident calls for support of Gov. Christie in 25th District.

To the Editor:

Legislative primary elections in off years tend to be sleepy, low turnout affairs.  Often, voters take these elections for granted, and a stealth candidate, with a small group of dedicated supporters, can hijack an election.

Recent state campaign finance reports reveal that public employee unions are attempting just that in the Republican Primary in the 25th Legislative District. They have poured tens of thousands of dollars, raised through coerced union dues outside of the district, into the campaign coffers of a candidate dedicated to defeating the Christie pension and benefit reforms. This candidate puts the narrow interests of public employee unions ahead of the public good. If taxes need to skyrocket to fund continued solid gold public employee union pensions and benefits, that’s a price he’s willing to make the taxpayers shoulder.

Without true pension and benefit reform, New Jersey’s taxes will skyrocket, even beyond their present outrageous levels.  The Republican Party–let alone in Morris and Somerset counties–needs to rally around Gov. Christie’s efforts to bring sanity to pensions and benefits. We cannot have Republican legislators voting with the Democrats to undermine the Governor’s program.

The present Republican Assembly team, Assemblymen (Michael Patrick) Carroll and (Anthony) Bucco, are devoted the Governor’s common sense proposals for reform. Their opponent is raising tens of thousands of public employee union dollars to defeat those necessary reforms.

Local Republicans should support proven, conservative representatives, who put the taxpayers–and not special interests–first.
