Mayor Thanks DPW for Quick Cleanup of Town Hall Basement Flood

A broken pipe caused nearly three feet of water to drench Town Hall basement on Saturday.

Mayor Tim Dougherty called it a "testament to the contractors" that a council meeting could be held on Tuesday, April 12, after an old water pipe burst over the weekend, causing nearly three feet of water to flood the Town Hall basement.

"That was heavy water flow down in the basement," Dougherty said during the meeting, which ran without use of emergency power, unlike on Monday he said when an emergency generator was utilized to hold regular municipal court proceedings. "But, we're back in business, which is all good."

The mayor said that on Saturday an old galvanized pipe, which likely had extensive corrosion due to years of use, simply burst. "This was just a nibble that rotted from the inside and burst," he said.

As a result, Dougherty suggested floor sensors be installed in the basement, which would be able to let authorities know if any water hits the floor again. "Sometimes it takes a little bit of disaster to come up with a remedy," he said. "Kudos to maintenance."
