Morristown, Schools $300K Richer

Grant money coming from the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program.

The Town of Morristown and the Morris School District are $310,800 richer thanks to a pair of grants from the Governor’s Office for the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program and Energy Allocation Initiative.

Morristown is adding $168,000 to the coffers as the Morris School District walks away $142,800 richer.

The Energy Allocation Initiative is intended to support efforts to encourage enhanced energy resilience for critical assets and facilities in New Jersey. The program will allow communities to pursue technical innovation by harnessing the resources of the State’s energy, environmental, and emergency management.

Morristown Mayor Tim Dougherty attended a meeting at the Governor’s Office last month regarding the Hazard Mitigation Grant Program & Energy Allocation Initiative. The meeting included representatives from State agencies, including the Office of Emergency Management and the Board of Public Utilities as well as a representative from the National Renewable Energy Laboratory.

Dougherty said that they are exploring some cutting edge options on what can be done with the grant money and that more information will be made available once some decisions are made.

“Its really really cutting edge interesting and good stuff,” Dougherty said. “When we get more information I will bring it forward. We’re going to leave it at that for now.”

When speaking of the grant during Tuesday's Council meeting, Dougherty was reluctant to speak further until they received more information and then he and the council would have a better idea of what options were available to them.

"I don't want to start talking about fuel cells and microgrids until we really get a handle on it," Dougherty said. "And we could just decide to buy a generator."
