Overnight Construction on South Street Could Last Until Friday

Residents voice concern over abrupt jackhammering Tuesday night.

Residents in the South Street area were a bit perturbed Tuesday night when they heard jackhammers at work around 10 p.m.

But that was all part of the plan, according to a road construction project supervisor working for the New Jersey Department of Transportation.

The Tuesday night work was to reset manhole casting before milling and paving could be done between the Morristown Green and Madison Avenue along Rt. 124 in Morristown.

The night work could last two more nights, said Jignesh Patel, the project supervisor. If weather doesn’t cooperate Wednesay night – scattered thunderstorms that lead to rain are forecasted – the work could overflow into Thursday night, Patel said.

Due to the busy traffic on that portion of roadway, doing this type of work during normal business hours (daytime) is very difficult, Patel said, and night work is necessary. Patel said the hours of operation were all part of the plan when the project was approved during the spring.

Once the week is over, however, the remainder of the milling and paving is set for day time hours, and not until September. This project, along with the same work farther east, is scheduled for completion no later than November 21, Patel said.
