Resident Offers 'Food for Thought' on Gay Marriage Vote

Margret Brady presented classic photo of South Street, circa 1915, Tuesday night.

It wasn't the only thing she presented to the Town Council during the meeting's public portion on Tuesday night. But, it probably elicited the most guffaws.

"I wanted to share this tonight," said Morristown resident Margret Brady as she held up a black-and-white photocopy of an old photo. The picture, taken in 1915, shows South Street from a vantage point at about the Green leading in the direction of what today is .

It's a pretty bucolic image: a horse-drawn buggy can be seen traversing the lightly-travelled road. The street is tree-lined, with some buildings that can still be seen today. Above it all is a banner, addressed to "Men of New Jersey."

"I offer this as food for thought to our governor when ," she concluded, with several chuckles and applause from the audience and Town Council.

If you were unaware of the subtext, Brady did elaborate after she sat down that, yes, she was comparing the public vote for suffrage to Gov. Chris Christie suggesting the public get to vote on whether or not to legalize gay marriage.

Do you think she has a point in the comparison? Take our poll and share your thoughts.
