Ward 2 Vote Recount Set For June 22

Town Council incumbent leads challenger by 19 votes.

On June 7, voters in Morristown went out to the polls to choose who they wanted to run in the general elections for four available Town Council seats in November.

But, that was not the end of the story, as Foster had vowed to have a recount to make sure everything had been on the up-and-up. This week, she got her wish.

State Superior Court Assignment Judge Thomas Weisenbeck approved this week a recheck of the voting machines, absentee and provisional ballots for the Ward 2 race, which netted Smith-Reid 195 votes (52.83% of the vote), Foster 176 (47.17% of the vote).

The recount is scheduled to be conducted starting at 9 a.m. on Wednesday, June 22, said County Clerk Joan Bramhall. She said she expected a final determination on who was the winner of the primary contest would be known before the end of the day.

Dale Kramer, chief deputy of the superintendent of elections, said this is not the first time a recount has been requested in Morristown. "It's not uncommon in the primary elections to have a recheck in the totals," she said.

Perhaps not, but it's a new experience for Smith-Reid, who has been a member of the Town Council for 11 years. "This will be the first time I was ever involved in this," she said. "She (Foster) has a right just like every candidate does.

"The process is out of my control. I'm only one vote," Smith-Reid said.

Foster could not immediately be reached for comment.
