No Idea Basketball Championship Proves to be Overtime Thriller

It took 2 extra sessions to decide who would take home the No Idea Sports basketball championship. Read on to find out who won...

With the Olympics only about 48 hours away, kids all over the world are imagining themselves standing on top of a podium, draped in a gold medal with their country’s national anthem playing. And while they might not be the Dream Team of Olympics past, 2 No Idea Sports basketball teams were dreaming of bringing home a championship of their own on Monday night.

Phi No Slamma or Jamma and BUMSQUAD took to the courts of Delbarton to battle for the title. Both teams didn’t have an easy regular season, with BUMSQUAD finishing with a .500 record at 3-3 and Phi No Slamma or Jamma ended with a 2-4 record. But, 1 of these 2 teams was about the end their season on a high note.

After winning the tip off, Phi No Slamma or Jamma scored first and took a 10-4 lead with 15 minutes remaining in the half. With 5 more minutes off the clock, each team scored 5 points a piece, with Phi No Slamma or Jamma up 15-9. BUMSQUAD tied up the game, 17-17, on a breakaway basket but couldn’t keep the score tied as the half ended with Phi No Slamma or Jamma up, 33-24.

A quick halftime was what BUMSQUAD needed to get going as they opened up the second half on a 5-0 run to cut Phi No Slamma or Jamma’s lead to just 4. The teams would go back and forth and with 10 minutes to go, Phi No Slamma or Jamma led 48-46. With 2 minutes left, the score was tied at 55. With only about a minute remaing, BUMSQUAD took their first lead of the game, 57-55. With 3 seconds left, Phi No Slamma or Jamma took full advantage of getting the ball under their basket as they scored and got the foul. The basket tied the game at 60 and a successful upcoming foul shot would practically secure the championship…but it wasn’t to be as Phi No Slamma or Jamma missed the shot, giving BUMSQUAD one last Hail Mary attempt at the championship. BUMSQUAD’s half court shot misses, but a foul is called, giving them a chance to win a game in which they led for only about a minute. Just like Phi No Slamma or Jamma’s foul shot, BUMSQUAD misses theirs and at the end of regulation the teams were tied at 60; to overtime we go!

Phi No Slamma or Jamma once again wins the tip off and scores the first 4 points of OT to go up 64-60. A Phi No Slamma or Jamma player fouled a BUMSQUAD player on his way to the hoop and while the shot didn’t go in, both foul shots did to cut the lead to 2 points. Nine seconds away from victory, Phi No Slamma or Jamma fouled again and BUMSQUAD didn’t let the foul shots during regulation affect their overtime shots from the line as they made both of them. When the buzzer sounded, the game was tied at 64, which sent the championship to double overtime.

It was all Phi No Slamma or Jamma in double OT as they held BUMSQUAD to 0 points and scored 6 of their own to take the championship, 70-64.

Congratulations to Phi No Slamma or Jamma on their win and to the Bum Squad on a great championship game! Thanks to all of our other teams: Toking Turtles and Tag’em and Bag’em for another great basketball season!
