Celebrating "The Sacred Table"

The community is invited to two special events in celebration of the publication of The Sacred Table: Creating a Jewish Food Ethic (CCAR Press), edited by Temple B’nai Or’s Associate Rabbi, Rabbi Mary L. Zamore. Rabbi Zamore will speak on “The Sacred Table: Why Now in Reform Jewish History?” on Friday, April 15, during the 7:30pm Shabbat Service, with a festive reception following. Rabbi Zamore will also be speaking on the book with a focus on the upcoming holiday of Passover on Sunday, April 17, at 9am and again at 11:30am.  The Sacred Table will be available for purchase and signing.

The Sacred Table: Creating a Jewish Food Ethic celebrates the ideology of educated choice and approaches kashrut as a multifaceted Jewish relationship with food and its production, integrating values such as ethics, community, and spirituality into our dietary practice.  The book includes topics such as food production, the environment, personal health, agricultural workers’ rights, animal rights, the spirituality of eating and fasting, gratitude, caring for the hungry, the challenges of eating together, and more.  The essays and the questions posed by these essays present a diverse range of voices, opinions, and options, highlighting the Jewish values that shape our food ethics and provide ideas about how to navigate these choices.
