Letters of Intent, Merit Scholarship Finalists Round Out Week at Morristown High

Colonial football standout Akil Anderson commits to UNH, Elizabeth Burke and Jenny Shih make it to next round of scholarship selection process.

Forget Morristown's Got Talent. How about Morristown High School's Got Talent?

Just one day after , senior Jenny Shih was formally congratulated by MHS principal Linda Murphy for her selection as a finalist in the National Merit Scholarship process. Shih was joined by fellow senior, Elizabeth Burke. The two are just two of 15,000 finalists nationwide, from an original pool of 60,000 semi-finalists,

Only 8,400 students will be selected for merit scholarships, which, according to the National Merit Scholarship Corporation website, are selected "to identify and honor academically talented U.S. high school students; to stimulate increased support for their education; and to provide efficient and effective scholarship program management for organizations that wish to sponsor college undergraduate scholarships."

Shih, who is looking to attend either Yale, Harvard or Princeton in the fall, had few words to offer in regard to the decision. "It's nice to be recognized," she said.

Likewise, Burke, who is considering attending the University of Virgina in the fall, was selective with her words. "It's definitely a great accomplishment."

Murphy laughed, noting, "they're very humble."

Likewise, Anderson signed his letter of intent to attend the University of New Hampshire this fall, where he will continue his football career in the free safety position. He also intends to major in marine biology or journalism.

"It feels really good," he said of the selection by UNH for a scholarship. "Finally, the hard work is paying off. Everyone dreams of it, getting a scholarship. I was in a bit of disbelief.

"It's like a dream," Anderson said.

He wanted to thank his mother, Robin Lewis, for "supporting me since day one," as well as all of the football coaches that have supported him throughout his football career, from Midget League to today.

"And, of course, I have to thank God," Anderson said.

Now that they have been honored, is it time to take a break?

Anderson will continue to workout, as well as participate in track and field this spring. Then, it's off to UNH to train on campus this summer.

And, for Shih and Burke?

"Back to work? We haven't stopped," Shih said.
