MHS Graduate Credit Reduction Discussed

Morris School District would bring requirement in line with state standard.

Correction: Patch incorrectly wrote that the required credit reduction had already been approved. It had only been discussed at the Feb. 27 Board of Education meeting.

The Morris School District discussed reducing the number of required credits from 140 to 120 for graduating Morristown High School students on Feb. 27.

The Board of Education cited several issues with its current requirement, including the current state required 120 credits already in place.

" [is] way above most districts in Morris County and caused some of our students not to graduate when in other districts, they would," said Board of Education member Ann Rhines. "This is a good alternative. The majority of students–about 95 percent–will still graduate with 140 credits. But, this may give some of our other students a chance.

"We have talked about this through the years; this was not something done rashly," Rhines added.

The Board member said the District has been assured most students will still commit to 140 credits if they decide to reduce the required minimum. "It's just a bit of a safety net for some of our students," she said.
