5th-Graders Craft Perfect 'Storm' to Aid Red Cross

Karen Thompson's fifth grade class at Thomas Jefferson School in Morris Township planned, executed and are in the midst of their "Storm of Stories" fundraiser, a book sale to aid the victims of natural disasters.

"At Thomas Jefferson Elementary, we place tremendous emphasis on character education," Thompson said. "It is important for children to think of others and realize that they can make a difference in someone's life. Whether it is a kind word, a helping hand, or a fundraiser to benefit victims of natural disasters, every person can, and should have a positive impact on others." 

Students first built their book inventory by soliciting slightly used books from family, friends and the Thomas Jefferson community. Once they secured enough books appropriate for school-aged children, they were ready to start selling to students during lunch time with prices ranging from .25 cents to $2.

"I believe the lessons students learn from helping others are ones they will carry with them for the rest of their lives," Thompson said. "I am very proud of the way my students have embraced this fundraiser and love that they were able to experience just how wonderful it feels to help others in need."

Last year, Thompson's class raised more the $1,500.00 selling bracelets for the Super Storm Sandy victims, and this year the class has collected $300 thus far with the plan being to present their earnings to the American Red Cross to assist the victims of Typhoon Haiyan as well as the victims of the tornadoes in the Mid West.
