Morristown's Urban Farm to Double in Size

The new farm includes an orchard and a larger chicken coop area.

Recently, Urban Farm at Lafayette has been getting a lot of attention from local Scouts.

A Morristown Girl Scout troop donated and decorated a new chicken coop and another Scout started a pizza garden. However, the farm’s getting crowded and thanks to contributions from Hampshire Real Estate and Kings Supermarket, they were able to expand.

With the additional land, two new farm sections will double the farm's size.

“It’s now a little under an acre total,” said Shaun Ananko, known as “Farmer Shaun.” He added that the chicken coop area will be increased and moved to a more central location on the farm and they will be able to put in an orchard.

“We expect to see more families and host more classes for the school district.”

As for the progress, despite a heat index topping 100 this week, the work is still being done to put up the walls of the new farm sections.

Ananko said that the they started on Monday and should be done on Wednesday or Thursday.

“The hard stuff is done now,” he said, referring to the posts being put into the ground. “Now it’s just cosmetics, like putting in the gate and the (wrapping fencing around the posts).”

The new addition will be unveiled officially in September to coincide with the farm’s pizza truck fundraising event. Check back with Patch for more information about this later.
