Reading Club and Music Group for Youth with Special Needs Continue this Winter

Summit Community Programs and TryCAN are pleased to announce two great programs for special youth.

The Reading Club continues to run again this winter, a series of weekly classes designed for children ages 5-9 to help children with special needs or reluctant readers experience the joys of reading.  In a completely embarrassment and failure free setting, the class will capitalize on strengths, instill self-confidence and foster a Can-Do attitude to help children read more confidently.  The Club is led by Sarah Hanson, a Certified Teacher who has a wealth of experience as a teacher in the school system and well as extensive experience teaching reading to students with unique needs. Sarah has also worked extensively in recreation for young children and is able to meld her love of education and recreation into our reading club.  In addition to working on core skills depending on your child's area of need (such as decoding, word attack, comprehension, making appropriate reading choices) using books, games and other activities, the Club plans on occasionally visiting the public library to help students make appropriate reading choices in the community.  The program will on Tuesdays from 4:45-5:30 pm starting January 21.  The series will run through the end of the school year.  Soon we will be adding Thursday sessions as well to give your child more opportunity for skill building and practice.  A great class and affordable at only $13 a week.

In Music with Jammin’ Jenn, children (ages 4-8) engage in singing, movement and instrument exploration in a fun and lively setting to increase body awareness, awareness of others, attention and listening skills and encourage a love of music.  Class runs Thursdays from 6:15 – 6:45 pm (January 23, 30, February 3, and 10).  The cost is $75 for the series.  Instructor Jenn Goodman is a certified music therapist.
