Since 1798, Morris County has been governed by an elected Board of Chosen Freeholders. The seven members serve three-year terms, and their main duties are to prepare a budget as legislators and spend the funds as administrators. Though Freeholder is a part-time position, the members often work the job full-time, overseeing the dozens of county departments, divisions, authorities, commissions, boards and study committees. The Board of Chosen Freeholders also regulates county property, finances and affairs.

Public meetings of the Board of Chosen Freeholders are held regularly on the second and fourth Wednesday of each month, except holidays, starting at 7:30pm in the Freeholders Public Meeting Room on the 5th floor of the County Administration and Records Building, Court Street, Morristown. See the county website for a full schedule or call 973-285-6015.
