Parents, Docs Call For Less Homework, Stress
Community members weigh in about the pressures that adolescents are facing in school after watching, "Race to Nowhere," a documentary that has been shown across the country.
More than 100 teachers, parents and doctors came out to the Morristown Medical Center on Thursday, May 10 to discuss the growing pressures that adolescents are facing in school and with extracurricular activities, and the impact it is having with children and teens across the country. Doctor Thomas Zaubler, the chairperson of the Department of Psychiatry at Morristown Medical Center led a panel discussion with two other doctors and the head of a prestigious private school with the concerned audience members, all looking to help children and teens combat the problem of being over-worked in this highly driven society. As a teacher of high school English and a parent, I do not assign more than thirty minutes of homework 2-3 nights per week. I teach important, standards- based material during class time and send home only the material that will check for comprehension, cement a concept, or ask them to think about a future concept critically.
