Local engineer made it to the $100,000 question on the TV game show.
A Morristown mechanical engineer didn't quite become a millionaire, but his appearance on a nationally televised game show did net him $25,000. Jon Papp appeared as a contestant on Friday's episode of “Who Wants To Be A Millionaire,” which was scheduled to air at 12:30 p.m. on WABC-TV. Because of a weather broadcast that interrupted regular programming, the episode was instead planned to air at 1:35 a.m. Saturday. Papp, 24, was described as a Michigan native and former lifeguard who runs a swing dancing club in his spare time (he even danced with host Meredith Vieira on the show). For members of Morristown's Arts Council of the Morris Area, its new name, MorrisArts, means a streamlined approach to what has now been 40 years of serving what was originally seen as an arts-starved region. Announcing its 40th anniversary kickoff on Jan. 24, the Arts Council of the Morris Area heralded its new name, new strategic plan, new logo and new mission at a gathering of nearly 100 at its 14 Maple Ave. headquarters in Morristown. The Mayo Performing Arts Center, Bickford Theatre, Harmonium Choral Society and Masterwork Chorus were among those nominated for the fifth-annual JerseyArts.com "People's Choice" awards. Area stages offer plenty of concerts, along with a few plays and musicals.
Music lovers are in luck the next few weeks, as venues across the area will be presenting concerts by some big-name artists. Classic-rock fans won't want to miss Jefferson Starship in Newton or the Steve Miller Band at the Mayo Center. If you want to relive the '80s, then Howard Jones' concert at the Mayo Center is for you. And the Newton Theatre will also be hosting a true Jersey legend when Southside Johnny and the Asbury Jukes perform there. You can even see a Klezmer concert at the Bickford Theatre. There are also plenty of shows finishing up their runs, such as "Henry IV, Part One" at the Shakespeare Theatre of New Jersey, "The Music Man" at the Villagers and "Our Town" at Somerset Valley Players. Fashion show new feature of annual student presentation of the arts.
This year, the annual Morristown High School Art and Design show also took to the Catwalk, by including a fashion show. The Art and Design Show every year has included a photography section of all students who submit along with anything from woodshop to painting and pencil to graphic design being featured around the high school's auxillary gym. Every year, the show has become more interactive, with live art painting at last year's show, to now having a live fashion show featuring original designs by students. ARTS! by the People, a local artist group that works to get locals involved in creative projects, also was at the show creating a live photograph collage. New Jersey Arts Education Census Project surveys nearly all schools to compare arts education offerings.
A statewide survey of arts education programs in New Jersey schools to be released Thursday finds a correlation between schools with more arts education programs and greater proficiency scores on the language sections of the state's High School Proficiency Assessment. The report is a follow-up to one conducted in 2007, and is a joint project of the New Jersey State Council on the Arts, the state Department of Education, Geraldine R. Dodge Foundation, New Jersey Arts Education Partnership, ArtPride New Jersey Foundation, and Quadrant Arts Education Research. It's a time of transitions as some theaters are wrapping up their season, while others are just getting started
Spring is when flowers start to bloom, but it's also the time when many theaters wrap up their seasons. The Bickford Theatre is presenting its last show of the season, "I Do!, I Do!" with a run starting April 12. The show written by Tom Jones and Harvey Schmidt (who also wrote "The Fantasticks") explores a long marriage through song and laughter. Meanwhile, Chester Theatre Group is preparing for its last show of the season by holding auditions for "Xanadu." Performers can also try out for parts in "Alice in Wonderland" at Brundage Park Playhouse and Trilogy Repertory Company's 2012 Plays in the Park summer season.
