National School Choice Week event held Sunday at Hyatt Morristown.
It wasn't a turnout on the scale of a mandate, but the organizer of an event in Morristown endorsing National School Choice Week said it's only the beginning. TEA for Education, held Sunday at Hyatt Morristown, was just one of hundreds of events being held nationwide in support of School Choice, a voucher program that would allow parents to send their children to schools outside their district. Speakers and attendees included members of various grassroots organizations, including several Tea Party organizations around the state, as well as former Jersey City mayor and former gubernatorial candidate Bret Schundler. That metaphor's almost as mixed up as the massive selection of bills up before the Legislature on its last day.
Today is that biannual silliest day of the year in Trenton, though this silliness is not the kind that makes the public smile. The culmination of the two-month lame duck session, the last full day of a legislative session, is a voting marathon, the last chance for bills to advance to the governor’s desk and nominees to move into new positions before they have to start the whole approval process over again. Remember that quote about laws being like sausages? Well in the state capitol today, the butchers are on steroids and the meat grinders spinning at hyperspeed. It’s a wonder no one loses a finger. The comment on "what happens to the school" when children opt out was very telling as a teacher was saying she'll loose her students, and didn't like that. . That is the attitude that holds school choice back, when teachers and schools are more concerned about themselves then they are about the children.
