Gov. Christie appeared at Seaside Heights boardwalk Friday to promote the Jersey Shore
The Jersey Shore is officially open for summer, Gov. Chris Christie said as he spent Friday morning in Seaside Heights promoting tourism in New Jersey. Early Friday, Christie appeared on NBC's Today Show, which broadcast its morning news program live from Seaside Heights. The governor later cut a ceremonial ribbon—a Guinness World Record at over five miles long—to officially declare the shore open. "It's an incredible day for New Jersey," Christie said in remarks. In Gov. Chris Christie's first television ad of his 2013 re-election campaign, the governor's leadership style is credited for renewing New Jersey residents' pride in their state after years of overtaxation and too much government spending. Gov. Chris Christie is the best person to lead New Jersey over the next four years, according to voters polled in a survey released this week by Quinnipiac University. Christie, a Republican, leads his Democratic rival, state Sen. Barbara Buono (D-Middlesex), 62 percent to 25 percent in the state's 2013 gubernatorial race, according to the poll. The governor's overall approval rating also remains high. State Sen. Barbara Buono joined Morristown Mayor Timothy Dougherty, local religious leaders and more than 100 people for a vigil and rally against gun violence on the Green Thursday. The rally, held on the two-month anniversary of the Newtown, Conn., school shooting, called for gun legislation reform and an end to gun violence. Buono called on change in Washington, DC to help make America safer and called on Gov. Chris Christie to instate a ban on assault rifles. 30 NJ mayors recommend gun safety laws in a letter to Gov. Chris Christie Thursday.
A coalition of over 30 mayors sent a message to Gov. Chris Christie Thursday pushing for "common sense national gun laws," according to a statement released by the Mayors Against Illegal Guns and the Morris Area Committee to Reduce Gun Violence. The mayors' letter highlighted loopholes in the country's background check system for gun ownership and asked Christie to support H.R. 137, a bill currently in the House of Representatives called the Fix Gun Checks Act which, if it passes, will close the gaps. About 6.6 million guns are privately sold or transferred in the U.S. every year with no background check required. Community safety panel discussion will be held at Morris County Library.
A group of elected officials and health and safety professionals will gather this month for a panel discussion on gun violence, mental illness, drug and alcohol addiction and school safety moderated by Kinnelon Mayor Robert Collins. The discussion, which will be held on Feb. 27 from 6:30 p.m. to 8:30 p.m. at the Morris County Library in Whippany, was organized by Morristown Councilwoman Alison Deeb in response to Gov. Morris County property taxes fell .8 percent last year, the only county drop in the state, according to Freeholder Director Tom Mastrangelo. In a press release sent Monday, Mastrangelo, a Montville resident, credited Gov. Chris Christie and his administration for redirecting property taxes downward through legislation enacted during his tenure. "By enacting salary arbitration, health benefits, and pension reform, local government was given the tools to reduce property taxes and in Morris County we did," he said. It’s been a consistent refrain from Gov. Chris Christie’s office following Hurricane Sandy’s landing on New Jersey’s shores. Make no mistake about it, he told the assembled crowd of lawmakers at the Statehouse Tuesday afternoon, New Jersey will be back.
