Christie to Seek Re-Election

Chris Christie announced he would seek a second term as New Jersey governor.

Gov. Chris Christie will seek a second term as New Jersey's governor. He made the announcement during an appearance at a press conference at the Port Monmouth Fire Dept. Monday afternoon. Christie declined to talk in detail about his bid, saying he is saving that for a more formal announcement in January.  But he did say he sought the advice of his wife, Mary Pat, and four children, over the Thanksgiving Day weekend, and got their blessing.  "I have a job to finish that I would have never anticipated to have six weeks ago," said Christie. He said loved the Garden State. "I want to leave it better than I found it when I'm done."  The gubernatorial election will take place in November 2013. In response to a question about whether he would …

Christie Helped Self More Than Romney, Poll Says

Governor of New Jersey's convention speech was best for the man himself, according to FDU's numbers.

Did Gov. Chris Christie gave a bigger boost to himself than to presidential hopeful Mitt Romney with his speech at the Republican National Convention? According to registered New Jersey voters who took place in a recent poll, yes, he did. Fairleigh Dickinson University’s PublicMind reports that 58 percent of registered voters with knowledge of the speech believe he was more successful at selling himself to the American public than advocating the Romney/Ryan ticket. According to the poll's results, only 23 percent said the speech was more effective at helping to convince the electorate to support Romney. “Governor Christie’s speech was seen or heard by a national audience, many of whom were being introduced to the governor for the first …

Pathmark Shooting, Party Bus Accident, Christie Keynote Top State News

Other top stories this week included the cancellation of MTV's 'Jersey Shore,' and the botched sinking of what was expected to be the world's largest underwater sculpture.

A 23-year-old man, described by neighbors as a recently discharged military veteran, shot and killed two co-workers before taking his own life at the Pathmark supermarket in Old Bridge early Friday morning, according to Middlesex County Prosecutor Bruce Kaplan. A 16-year-old boy from Sayreville riding on a bus full of teenagers heading to a Sweet 16 was killed Friday after he stuck his head out of a roof hatch on the bus and hit an overpass as the vehicle drove on Interstate 95 southbound, near the George Washington Bridge, an official said. The show that made Seaside Heights famous—or, at least, infamous—is going off the air. MTV announced Thursday afternoon its hit series "Jersey Shore" will end after a recently taped season airs this …

Affordable Housing Fight Goes Back to the Courts

Housing advocate and municipalities try to prevent the state from taking their funds.

The battle between the Christie administration and the Fair Share Housing Center continues. This time, the two sides are going to court Friday over as much as $200 million in local affordable housing trust funds. So far, the Appellate Division of Superior Court has been kind to the Cherry Hill-based housing advocates, but this case could be a different story. To help balance the budget, Gov. Chris Christie recommended the state use the trust fund money. The administration appears to be within its legal right to do so, as the law creating the funds—and the developer fees that municipalities levy to subsidize them—specified municipalities had to “commit to spend” the money within four years. The clock strikes midnight on July 17. But as …

Column: Christie's Battle With Dems Quite a Show

After spending vetoes, governor calls for a special legislative session on tax cuts.

Gov. Chris Christie had the last word on state spending last Friday, vetoing most of the new expenditures the Democrats had sought within the budget and in separate bills. And then he went further, calling the Legislature back for a command performance, a special summer session on Monday to try to bully them into the tax cut he has been seeking all year. Rarely, when there is divided government, does the theater that is the process of enacting a state budget in New Jersey disappoint. And that’s what all of this is, political theater. Because the Democrats are not going to pass Christie’s 10 percent across-the-board tax cut proposal as it gives more money back to the wealthy than to the poor and middle class. And there’s no way Christie is …

Mike,I don't know about you but my property tax rebate is still there. I had a tax rebate last year and this year, if you didn't get one I would take that up with someone, but its not Christie's fault. I know that in NYC when tax rebates come the city takes it and the people get nothing. I haven't given up anything, but if we have to give up a little something to get the state back on track for …   more ›

Gov. Wants Non-Partisan Effort to Approve Tax Cuts

Christie also addresses video parody with Newark mayor during his East Hanover meeting.

The focus Wednesday of Gov. Chris Christie's 79th Town Hall meeting was the governor's proposed 10 percent, across-the-board tax cuts. Christie, speaking at the East Hanover Fire Department, said he's determined to deliver the tax break New Jersey residents have been waiting for. “The people of New Jersey haven’t had a tax cut in over a decade," he said. "You’ve made the sacrifices that were necessary to step up and help me balance this budget, and I want to give you some of your money back to spend on your family, not to spend in Trenton." Christie looks to accomplish this despite some opposition across county lines. According to Christie, two of those opposing the proposal in particular—Assembly Majority Leader Lou Greenwald (D-Camden) …
