Project expected to begin in the fall with first plantings in spring 2014.
Not only is Frelinghuysen Middle School going to be a little bigger this fall, it's expected to get a little greener, as well. In collaboration with Grow it Green Morristown, plans have been drawn up to create a 2,000 square foot garden on the sprawling West Hanover Avenue property, which will be used by students as both an outdoor classroom as well as a source of produce. Carolle Huber, one of the co-founders of Grow it Green and a landscape architect by trade donated her design services to the school after her and Shaun Ananko--the farm manager at Grow it Green Morristown's Urban Farm at Lafayette--discussed possible projects with FMS Principal Mark Manning last spring. "2012 was the first year Frelinghuysen students came to the Urban …

Funding for nine open space projects in Morris County approved by freeholders.
Funding for nine Morris County open space projects—including Morristown's Early Street Community Garden—were approved by the Morris County Board of Chosen Freeholders on Wednesday. Freeholders approved shifting $4.4 million from the county's Preservation Trust Fund to help preserve 84 acres of open space in eight towns. The largest grant award, $2,075,000, will go to the Harding Land Trust for preservation of 43.5 acres in Harding and Morris townships known as "Frelinghuysen Fields 2." A grant of $1,575,000 was awarded to Morristown to acquire nearly an acre of land occupied by Grow it Green Morristown's Early Street Community Garden. For several years, the non-profit organization has maintained the garden on land once slated for …

'Tis the season. Now that fall has arrived, sundown is coming sooner, nights are getting chillier, some familiar signs of summer are saying "so long." One of those, the Thursday and Saturday produce sales at Grow it Green Morristown's Urban Farm at Lafayette, takes its last bow for the year on Thursday. Grow it Green Morristown's farmstand has provided low-cost fruits and veggies from the Urban Farm all summer. After Thursday's 6 p.m. to dusk farm stand, said farm manager Shaun Ananko, the remaining product grown at the farm will be shifted to the cafeteria at Morristown High School, which has worked with Grow it Green since last year. For your last opportunity to eat fresh for less, the Urban Farm has bell peppers, hot peppers, eggplant, …

Terry Connolly wants people to know sustainability isn't just about buying from your local farmer. Though that's important, the Community Soup Kitchen and Outreach Center Executive Director wants people to know sustainability is much more than just that. It's her organization, for example. That is why CSK is one of several new participants in the Morris County Sunday Supper Series' fourth edition, to be held from 4 to 7 p.m. Sept. 23 at Hyatt Morristown. Sponsored by Hyatt Morristown and the Highlands Dinner Club and benefitting Sustainable Morristown, the tasting event started a year ago will focus its attentions this time on local food sources, from the farmer to the person who prepared what the farmer grows. The event's title, …

After a nearly 90-minute information session, Second Ward Councilwoman Raline Smith-Reid's opinion remained the same. She does not want a community garden on a plot of preserved land on Martin Luther King Avenue. Others at the informal meeting at Town Hall Monday were on the fence as to whether or not the Grow it Green Morristown-organized project was a good idea for land once home to a long-abandoned furniture store. But, several said they were willing to continue listening. Smith-Reid organized the public meeting after Grow it Green—which also maintains another community garden on Early Street and The Urban Farm at Lafayette behind the Lafayette Learning Center—sought approval from the town in August to lease the plot of land for two …
Council-organized event at 7 p.m. Sept. 10 at Town Hall.
If you are of an opinion on whether a proposed community garden should be permitted in the Second Ward on Martin Luther King Avenue, you will want to head to Town Hall Monday night. Town Council is scheduled to host an information session on the proposed garden, at 7 p.m. Sept. 10 at Town Hall. Grow it Green Morristown, which maintains the Urban Farm at Lafayette and another community garden on Early Street, have been in talks with the town for over a year on the garden. It would be located on open space preserved after a long-abandoned property was finally knocked down about a decade ago. Second Ward Councilwoman Raline Smith-Reid has expressed concern with the garden as recently as August, as she had been one of the residents involved in…

Several Second Ward residents presented petition opposing plan at Tuesday council meeting; community forum to discuss proposed garden to be scheduled.
A tree may grow in Brooklyn, but a community garden does not grow in the Second Ward of Morristown. At least not yet. An introduction Tuesday night by Town Council that would eventually lead to the leasing of land on Martin Luther King Avenue to Grow it Green Morristown for their second community garden in town was tabled when several Second Ward residents–including councilwoman Raline Smith-Reid–expressed their concerns with the idea. A community forum to discuss the issue, to be scheduled by Smith-Reid, was not set by the end of Tuesday's meeting. James Kersey, a Second Ward resident and former Planning Board member, presented a petition of about 100 signatures he said came from people that are in opposition to the community garden, …

Third-annual Grow it Green Morristown fundraiser held Sunday at The Urban Farm at Lafayette.
At first, looking up at the sky, one could easily assume Morristown had dodged a rainy bullet. Alas. Yes, thunder and lighting–and a sudden downpour–ultimately called the third-annual Grow it Green Morristown "Alfresco in the Garden" fundraiser early Sunday evening. Such is the risk of going "alfresco." But, not before folks enjoyed several hours of camaraderie, music, foods prepared using many ingredients grown right there at The Urban Farm at Lafayette and pizza courtesy Lombardi's pizza truck.

Grow it Green Morristown is not an agricultural organization, they're a community building organization that just happens to be involved in agriculture because, as Samantha Rothman said, "everybody's got to eat." That mindset has helped the small Morristown born and bred group of community builders grow over its last several years of existence. One of those ways they have built community is with its annual "Alfresco in the Garden" fundraiser, which raises money for the upkeep of its grounds and continued support of its programs with the Morris School District. The event returns for its third year at 5 p.m. on Sunday at The Urban Farm at Lafayette. This time "Alfresco in the Garden" is being held a month earlier. It gives people another …

Oh my God, and just when I thought nobody could be more annoying than Clyde. Wholesome community involvement is probably the most important thing that can be taught. However, you wouldn't know that since you sit in your house hairsplitting grammar rules on websites. Furthermore, I don't think students will be working in the garden from 8 to 3 everyday; there will be plenty of time for math and …   more ›
