Community Theatre Celebrates 75 on Dec. 23

Former employees, fans share memories from three-quarters of a century.

The following is an article commissioned by the Mayo Performing Arts Center on occasion of the 75th anniversary of The Community Theatre. Morristown's Cultural Icon Turns 75 For many, The Community Theatre hasn't just been just another entertainment venue; it's been the cultural center of Morristown and home for warm memories... By Ellen Wilkowe The boys would linger by the candy counter at the movie house where Adeline Agnes McLaughlin Warlin, formerly of Morris Plains, worked alongside her friend, Lucille. "They were not there to buy candy," she said. "They were there to see Lucille and me." Meanwhile, Len Taylor of Chester Township laments on the classic dinner and a movie date, one that would leave him near broke. "A terrific date was …

Comedian to Bring 'Wright Stuff' to Morristown

Steven Wright will be performing at Mayo Performing Arts Center on Nov. 29.

There are a few things you might like to know about comedian Steven Wright.   He calls himself a "peripheral visionary." He has "a decaffeinated coffee table." His "life is not based on a true story." He thinks that "if heat rises, heaven might actually be hotter than hell." And he hates it when writers do stories on him that use the same puns over and over, for instance, articles that are headlined, "the Wright Stuff." On Thursday, Nov. 29, Wright will bring his off-center brand of humor to Morristown when he performs at the Mayo Performing Arts Center.   There are many, many standup comedians out there, but Wright's deadpan absurdist wit is well-recognized as his own. Ever since his first gig—three minutes in 1979 at an open mike in …

Art Garfunkel Cancels Morristown Show

Oct. 5 show one of several of iconic singer's performances recently nixed or postponed.

Sounds of silence will be heard at the Mayo Performing Arts Center Friday, but not the kind those expecting to see Art Garfunkel's performance had in mind, as the music legend has cancelled the appearance due to illness. Ed Kirchdoerffer, general manager for the theater, said refunds will be given to everyone who purchased tickets, which ranged from $52 to $97. The event will not be rescheduled. The 70-year-old singer best known for his collaborations with Paul Simon in the 1960s postponed five shows in September, including an Atlantic City performance on Sept. 14, according to his website. In addition to Garfunkel's Oct. 5 cancellation in Morristown, an Oct. 6 performance in Pennsylvania also has been cancelled. The Standard Speaker …

Jars of Clay: We're Music Fans as Well as Musicians

Tennessee-based folk rockers to perform at Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown on Oct. 7.

For any musician, to have even one song become synonymous with your name is a rare feat. The flipside to that is, sometimes, that song becomes all you're ever known for. For Jars of Clay, that feat came in 1995 when their song "Flood" broke beyond their Christian Rock roots and into the mainstream. Since their debut album that year, the Tennessee-based band has recorded an additional 10 albums, with another anticipated in March 2013. For "Flood" fans planning on seeing the band when they come to the Mayo Performing Arts Center in Morristown on Oct. 7, don't fret: the quartet will likely play the track, and guitarist and founding member Stephen Mason is happy to do. "We're music fans as well as musicians," he said, noting a recent concert …

Rising Band Claim Success from Hard Work

Los Angeles-based Fitz and the Tantrums to perform Sept. 20 at Mayo Performing Arts Center.

Call Fitz and the Tantrums a band on the cusp. Have you heard this song somewhere? Or, maybe this song? You couldn't quite place it, but you knew you liked it. John Wicks, the band's drummer, said that happens a lot. "A couple bars of the chorus and they’re like, 'hey it’s you guys,'" he said. You can get familiar with those songs and many more when these Los Angeles-based musicians head to the Mayo Performing Arts Center on Sept. 20. Since releasing their debut album "Pickin' up the Pieces" in 2010, and since getting face time on shows like Conan, Jimmy Kimmel Live! and The Tonight Show with Jay Leno, such epiphanies have been happening with greater regularity, as the band's star continues to rise. "Everyone is really on board," Wicks …

'Winter' Comes Early to Morristown

Blues guitar legend Johnny Winter to perform at 'Rock N Blues Fest' Thursday at Mayo Performing Arts Center.

When you have been performing for over 50 years, you get the right to be a man of few words. For blues guitarist Johnny Winter, the music does the talking. Winter, along with a who's who of rock and roll greats, will be on hand Thursday at the Mayo Performing Arts Center for the "Rock N Blues Fest," formerly called Hippiefest. Winter, with his Johnny Winter Band, will be performing songs from the guitarist's extensive catalog including songs from Roots, his 2011 tribute to some of the classic blues music that has influenced the 70-year-old from Texas. "Everyone gets a little something," he said. "They are songs I listened to since I listened to music, I've been influenced by them all. What can I say they’re just good songs. "I hope …

'Dr. House,' Hugh Laurie, Headed to Morristown

Actor, writer and musician performs Jazz and Blues with The Copper Bottom band Sept. 12 at the Mayo Performing Arts Center.

Depending on your style, age–or, perhaps, your side of the Atlantic Ocean–performer Hugh Laurie is familiar to many for many different reasons. The British-born actor won critical acclaim in the late 1980s, 1990s as one-half of the comedy duo Fry and Laurie, with fellow Brit and best friend Stephen Fry. He has published a successful detective novel, The Gun Seller. And, for many, he was the curmudgeony genius Dr. Gregory House on the Fox television program bearing the character's name, from 2004 to 2012. With acting and writing conquered, Laurie is well on his way to becoming recognized now for his musical chops, which will be on display Wednesday, Sept. 12 at 8 p.m. at the Mayo Performing Arts Center. Delving into the sounds of New …
