Anti-Gun Violence Rally Joined by Sen. Buono, Local Leaders

The rally and vigil brought together politicians, religious leaders and citizens.

State Sen. Barbara Buono joined Morristown Mayor Timothy Dougherty, local religious leaders and more than 100 people for a vigil and rally against gun violence on the Green Thursday. The rally, held on the two-month anniversary of the Newtown, Conn., school shooting, called for gun legislation reform and an end to gun violence. Buono called on change in Washington, DC to help make America safer and called on Gov. Chris Christie to instate a ban on assault rifles. "If you need an assault weapon to hunt deer, maybe hunting isn't your sport," she said. "Maybe you ought to take up golf." Michael and Eileen Cleckner of Raritan also want to see change in Washington. The two drove to Hartford, Conn., to march in an anti-gun violence rally there …

Gun Regulation Focus of Morristown Rally Tonight

30 NJ mayors recommend gun safety laws in a letter to Gov. Chris Christie Thursday.

A coalition of over 30 mayors sent a message to Gov. Chris Christie Thursday pushing for "common sense national gun laws," according to a statement released by the Mayors Against Illegal Guns and the Morris Area Committee to Reduce Gun Violence. The mayors' letter highlighted loopholes in the country's background check system for gun ownership and asked Christie to support H.R. 137, a bill currently in the House of Representatives called the Fix Gun Checks Act which, if it passes, will close the gaps. About 6.6 million guns are privately sold or transferred in the U.S. every year with no background check required. The letter also points out that almost 80 percent of guns used in crimes in New Jersey were originally purchased in other …

Mayor Joins Mayors Against Illegal Guns

Tim Dougherty joins hundreds of other mayors around country.

Earlier this month, mayors from throughout New Jersey met in Cranford to hold a public meeting expressing their support and participation in the national Mayors Against Illegal Gun coalition.  On Wednesday, Morristown's mayor, Tim Dougherty, announced he also was joining the 800-or-so mayors around the country that have called for solutions to gun violence in the United States. Roughly 100 of those mayors have joined the organization since the Newtown, Conn., elementary school massacre. “It is time to put aside partisanship and address the problem of gun violence," Dougherty said in a press release of his participation in an organization that includes Republicans, Democrats and Independents. Dougherty is a registered Democrat. "There have …

Mayor, stick to your municipal duties. Your not going to become a world leader taking on the gun control cause. It is way above you and none of your business. Just stick to parking spaces and local business.   more ›

NJ Mayors Group Sends Message About Guns

While not part of Mayors Against Illegal Guns, Morristown area mayors support its mission and message.

Something must be done about gun violence.  That was both the message from both Morristown area leaders, as well as those gathered Monday in Cranford for a Mayors Against Illegal Guns advocacy group rally. Cranford wasn't the only town where officials from the advocacy group Mayors Against Illegal Guns were gathered. From Vermont to New Mexico, members of the 800-strong coalition of elected officials voiced their frustration to Washington and pushed legislators to support laws that ban violent assault weapons, makes gun trafficking a federal crime and increases the background checks on potential gun owners. "It has nothing to do with the Second Amendment, it's about gun violence," said former N.J. Gov. Jim Florio, who joined the group of …
