County to Refurbish Courthouse Flagpole

For the next two weeks, there will not be the usual flag flying in front of the county courthouse.

For the next two weeks, don't be alarmed if you don't see the usual flags flying in front of the county courthouse.  The flagpole on the front lawn of the Morris County Courthouse on Washington Street in Morristown will be painted this weekend and will need about two weeks to cure. Morris County officials want the public to know that flags will not be flying from the flagpole during that time. In the interim, however, an American flag will be placed outside of the front entrance to the courthouse during regular business hours. Flags will again be flown as soon as the flagpole is ready.

Bryan Mills, 37, of Liberty Street, appeared Wednesday before Morris County Superior Court Judge Mary Gibbons Whipple via teleconference from the Morris County Detention Center following his Monday arrest. Mills has been charged with the Jan. 18 aggravated assault of an individual being publicly identified as "O.B." The victim remains hospitalized, Morris County Assistant Prosecutor Anthony Scibetta said, relaying information from a Morristown Police Department detective that the victim had a fractured skull, broken nose and "serious and significant trauma." The attorney told the judge …

Pair along with another individual are accused of raping an intoxicated girl in 2011.

Two Morristown teens accused of sexually assaulting a girl in 2011 will be tried as adults, according to the Star-Ledger. The previously-unidentified pair were 17 when they and 19-year-old Tyrec Philips, also of Morristown, are accused of having allegedly given a 17-year-old female, also of Morristown, something to drink that made her fall in and out of consciousness. The trio then allegedly drove from a Hazel Street house to a secluded part of Monroe Street, where they allegedly had sex with …

Family court judge to decide if two men who were underage at the time of the alleged incident should be tried as adults.

The waiver hearing to determine if two Morristown men—juveniles at the time of an alleged sexual assault in 2011—can be tried as adults began Thursday with detailed and at times graphic descriptions of the alleged incident. The two men, along with 19-year-old Tyrec Phillips—an adult at the time of the alleged incident who has appeared in adult criminal court—are accused of giving a 17-year-old girl something to drink at a Hazel Street home in September 2011 that caused her to fall in and out of consciousness. The three then allegedly drove the unconscious girl to a secluded spot on Monroe Street, near Evergreen Cemetery, where they are accused of having sex with her. Phillips was released Sept. 21 from jail on $100,000 bail—reduced from an…

Judge to Rule if Accused Rapists Will Be Tried as Adults

Two Morristown men were 17 at the time of alleged incident in September 2011.

A hearing to determine if two Morristown men currently in family court will be tried as adults for an alleged sexual assault of a teenage girl is scheduled to reconvene Thursday morning. A pair of publicly unidentified men were 17 in September 2011, when they and 19-year-old Tyrec Philips, also of Morristown, are accused of having sexually assaulted a girl after having allegedly giving her something to drink that made her fall in and out of consciousness. The case has thus far been before Morris County Superior Court Family Division Judge Michael Paul Wright, but prosecutors have sought to try the unidentified pair as adults. The two men in family court have not been named because of their ages at the time of the alleged incident. The …

Accused Rapists Should Be Tried as Adults, Prosecutor Says

Father of one of the accused claims his son is being treated unfairly, pleads for his release from detention center.

The father of one of the men accused of raping a girl in 2011 vocally expressed his frustration Wednesday that his son and another man accused of the alleged assault remained in juvenile detention when they had only been charged. Meanwhile, prosecutors have filed a motion to try the two Morristown men—who have not been named since they were juveniles at the time of the alleged incident—as adults. Morris County Superior Court Family Division Judge Michael Paul Wright is expected to hear from prosecutors and defense attorneys for the pair on Oct. 16 and decide whether to grant the request. The two men, along with 19-year-old Tyrec Phillips—an adult at the time of the alleged incident who has appeared in adult criminal court—are accused of …

Accused Rapist's Bail Maintained at $150K

Tyrec Phillips, 19, is one of three men charged with sexually assaulting intoxicated female teenager in 2011.

The only one of three Morristown men charged as an adult with raping an intoxicated female teenager in 2011 had his bail maintained at $150,000 Thursday, according to a Daily Record article. Tyrec Phillips, 19, who was without an attorney as he appeared from the Morris County jail via videocamera link Thursday, is among a trio of men police say raped a 17-year-old girl last year after giving her a drink that caused her to fall in and out of consciousness. Unlike the other two accused, who were 17 when the alleged incident occurred and are presently being seen by Morris County Superior Court Family Division Judge Michael Paul Wright, Phillips was 18 years old at the time of the alleged incident.
