Garbage, Bucket Trucks Knock Down Poles, Power Lines

Occupants of two vehicles needed to be rescued after live wires fell on Washington Street, which remains closed between Kahdena Road and Western Avenue; in a separate incident, a bucket truck ran into lines near the Morris County Courthouse.

In a span of less than a half-hour, a garbage truck and a bucket truck each struck and brought down power lines in two unrelated incidents about a half-mile apart on Washington Street and Western Avenue Tuesday morning. The garbage struck first hit power lines on Washington Street near the corner of Mills Street at about 8:30 a.m., a Morristown police officer on the scene said. The truck knocked down three utility poles and power lines, which remained active on the ground as of about 9 a.m. The lines fell on two vehicles where the occupants needed to be pulled out by utility workers who were passing through the area, the police officer said. Power in that area of Mills Street had gone out as a result of the incident. Shortly after the …

A 14-year-old girl reported being followed on Speedwell Avenue Tuesday, according to police.

A 14-year-old told Morristown Police she was followed Tuesday afternoon by a Jeep Cherokee while walking home on Speedwell Avenue. According to a press release issued by Capt. Steven Sarinelli Thursday morning, the report filed Wednesday afternoon claims a black Jeep drove slowly behind the teen as she walked home at about 5 p.m. on Oct. 23. The teen then noticed two Hispanic males crossing Speedwell Avenue and one of them yelled "get her," according to the press release. She described the men as two older Hispanic males with dark hair, wearing jeans, light-colored, hooded …

I am from Mexico. Live and work legally in Morristown. And I think we need to get rid of these guys NOW. I looked for a job in the US because I couldn't stand the lack of safety and civility in Mexico City. Honestly, in most Latin cultures this kind of behavior towards lonely woman is relatively common. It's "tolerated" and it absolutely shouldn't. We have to take a stand. We need CIVIL residents…   more ›

A homeless man slashed another individual over the repayment of a $20 loan, police said. Morristown Police are searching for a man who, according to a police report filed by Officer Brian McDonnell, went to the Community Soup Kitchen shortly after noon on Monday, allegedly intoxicated and confronted a friend he had loaned $20 to a couple weeks before. When that man said he didn't have the money, the other allegedly pulled out a pocket knife, pushed it against the other's left side and said he was going to "stick him" if he didn't get his money back, according to the report. The two men then walked outside and the alleged victim hit the man with a knife in the head, prompting the suspect to slash him across the arm and run off, according to…

Update: Several Store Windows Smashed on Speedwell

Majority of broken windows were between Early and Flagler streets, according to police.

Morristown Police are investigating why several Speedwell Avenue storefront windows were smashed last weekend. Officer Joseph Heuneman responded Saturday morning to Speedwell Wine and Liquor, whose owner said he had arrived at his business at 8 a.m. to find his front window smashed. The owner of the liquor store said no rock or any other object that could have been used to break the window had been found, according to the officer's report. The owner said he had closed his business at 11 p.m. Friday, meaning the incident would have happened sometime between then and 8 a.m. Saturday. He also told the officer an alarm was set, but he had received no phone calls from his alarm company, according to the report. Meanwhile, Heuneman noticed …

Police Chief Helps Maintain Order Outside Bars

Peter Demnitz has decades of crowd management experience.

Morristown Police Chief Peter Demnitz is noticeably uncomfortable with taking the credit. When asked about why he has joined other officers from his department—as well as assistance from Rockaway Borough and Morris County Sheriffs—on patrol during bar-heavy weekend evenings, Demnitz begs off. Yes, while Mayor Tim Dougherty has publicly noted the chief's several decades of crowd management training and his assurance he will give the somewhat heated issue of how to control the swell of weekend drinkers "his personal attention," Demnitz emphasized the help police have received from several downtown bars in maintaining as much order as possible. That, and knowing when it's time to call the cops. Such was the case when a 21-year-old Budd Lake …

Chief Demnitz is not a good leader. How he stays in this position is beyond me. He is not about truth and justice. He is not transparent. In fact, he covers up for his officers misconduct, and it appears as though he supports this type of behavior. His arrogance and actions support that he and his officers are above the law. He should be replaced by someone who heads up a department that centers …   more ›

Updated: Fuel Spill Causes Minor Delays, Powerful Odor

Sand used to dry up spilled gas on Madison Avenue.

No one was injured Wednesday when a tractor trailer had a fuel spill on Madison Avenue, just over the Morristown border in Morris Township. The tractor trailer appeared to have been leaking for a while, as a strong gas smell and slick of spilled fluid was evident in several areas of town, including Franklin Street and near the I-287 off ramp on South Street. The bulk of the spill, however, occurred on Madison Avenue at Pitney Place shortly before 5 p.m., ironically near several gas stations. Police from Morristown and Morris Township, and fire crews from Morristown, Morris Township and Whippany reported to the scene, as sand was spread out on the roadway to clean up the gas. Traffic delays were minor as cones were placed on the road to …

Man Who Walked Into Wrong House Had Heroin, Cops Say

48-year-old Speedwell Avenue resident said he was looking for a friend who lived in a Mount Kemble Avenue boarding house, according to police.

What began as a case of simply being at the wrong address ultimately resulted in one Morristown resident's arrest on drug possession charges. Kevin Cromwell, 48, of Speedwell Avenue, was arrested and charged with possession of a controlled dangerous substance and possession of a hypodermic syringe at about 6 p.m. Sept. 20. According to Officer Brian LaBarre's report, police received a call from "The Wilson House"—a group home for young women on Mount Kemble Avenue—that an unknown individual had been wandering around the residence. En route to the house, LaBarre spotted a man walking who fit the description provided and went to confront him, according to the report. LaBarre spoke with the man, Cromwell, whom he knew from past encounters, …

Man Stabbed Outside Speedwell Ave. Bar, Cops Say

Alleged victim says Danny's Pub patron attacked him and ran off, according to police.

A man standing outside Danny's Pub early Sunday morning told police a bar regular pulled out a knife, stabbed him and ran off. Speaking to Officer Eric Petr through a translator, the victim, who has not been identified by police, said he was outside the bar smoking a cigarette at about 2 a.m. A man walked out of the bar, pulled a knife and stabbed the man in the left forearm, according to police. The man then ran away in the direction of South Street, according to the report. The victim, however, could not provide a written statement to police due to his intoxicated state at the time, police said. The victim told police he did not know the man's name but had seen him at the bar a number of times, according to the report. He was described …
