Regular Service Returns to Morris & Essex Line

NJ Transit will continue to operate shuttle service out of Chatham, Madison and Convent stations.

Regular weekday midtown direct service will resume between Dover and New York Penn Station and Summit and New York Penn Station starting Monday, according to information on the New Jersey Transit website. Shuttle service will continue to operate once an hour between Summit and Hoboken, and between Chatham, Madison and Convent stations and Liberty State Park, with ferry service from there to Battery State Park. The Morris & Essex line also resumed regular weekend service on Saturday, including connecting Montclair-Boonton Line service to and from Hoboken. NJ Transit's Morris Line Resumes Service Monday

Service will be limited as transportation company continues to recover from Sandy.

New Jersey Transit announced it will resume limited midtown direct service along the Morris line beginning Monday. This is the first time the line has offered service since Tropical Storm Sandy hit the region on Oct. 29. Transportation Commissioner and NJ Transit Board Chairman James Simpson said emergency bus and ferry operations will continue into midtown and lower Manhattan despite train service resuming. Service begins with the first train departing Denville at 4:07 a.m. and one train per hour within the 7 a.m., 8 a.m., 9 a.m. and 10 a.m. hours. 'No Estimate' for Morris Train Service Restoration

NJ Transit spokesman said damage along Morris and Essex line was one of the worst seen.

New Jersey Transit spokesman John Durso, Jr. has no estimate for when rail service along the Morris and Essex line will resume. "The damage wrought on the M&E was amongst the worst suffered by any NJ Transit rail line in the state," Durso said in an email to Patch. "There are no estimates ... [for when] the M&E can safely resume service." To help residents commute to Manhattan, New Jersey Transit has established three methods of transportation free of charge starting Friday. Officials Announce New Jersey Transit Safety Measures

Safety initiative comes after death of three teenagers in October

A variety of safety measures will sweep New Jersey Transit lines within the next year or so, transportation officials announced Wednesday, in an effort to reduce the number of accidental train deaths across the state. The safety improvements, which include improved signage, warning systems and educational programs, are the result of a three-month study by the Safety Along Railroads Leadership Oversight Committee, formed in wake of the deaths of three teenagers by New Jersey Transit trains last October. This illustrates one of the big benefits of aerial monorails, they aren't in the motorists way and people don't get killed on the tracks. They also don't get held up by snow or flooding and the infrastructure is much cheaper to keep in good repair.   more ›
