Cancellations include anti-bully event to be held at Morristown High School.
Tuesday's winter weather event may not have been strong enough to knock out school (or power, bite our tongues), but apparently it has proven enough to knock out all afternoon activities. The Morris School District made the announcement by midday to cancel all after-school activities in light of the storm, which is predicted to cause more trouble by evening. Unfortunately for anyone planning on attending the anti-bullying seminar Tuesday night at Morristown High School, that has been cancelled as well. The event has been rescheduled for Dec. 12 at 7 p.m.

On Thursday, Morristown High School seniors were seniors no more, as they received their diplomas, amid the cheering of friends and families, and amid the clicking of cameras. That being said, Morristown Patch knows you've got photos (and videos) you'd love to share with the rest of the community. And, this doesn't just apply to MHS grads. Did you celebrate your little one's graduation from Frelinghuysen Middle School? Elementary School? College? This is "Graduation Season," and we want you to boast and brag en masse with us! We've got plenty of shots already, but we'd love for you to share yours. Now you can do it easily by clicking on the "upload photos" button in this article. Be sure to add a caption or name so everyone knows what …
Some, however, are venturing further west, while a few head out of the country.
The majority of Morristown High School Class of 2012 seniors attending college this fall plan on doing so relatively close to home. That is, many of them will be headed to college in the northeast. Among those colleges are many New Jersey colleges, including Drew, Rowan, FDU and Rutgers. Some, however, are heading west, to such locations at UCLA and San Diego State University. And a relative few plan to leave the United States altogether, as they prepare to attend schools in Colombia and Canada. Click on the tabs of the map to see where MHS students plan to attend college this fall.

State standard for graduating seniors is 120 credits; Morris School District had been at 140.
The Board of Education voted Monday to approve reducing the number of required credits for graduating high school students in the Morris School District, from 140 to 120. While the state standard for required credits is 120, the district had voted a number of years ago to raise its standard. The reverse course came when the district said it realized some students who would be eligible to graduate pretty much anywhere else in New Jersey were having a hard time graduating here. Most students, officials said, would be unaffected by the change, as they often met or exceeded the 140 credit benchmark already. Board member Lisa Pollack, who had been on the BOE when the minimum was raised to 140, noted it was not a decision made lightly at that …

Also, Ann Rhines re-elected, Fran Rossoff elected to first term on Board of Ed.
It wasn't a nailbiter. In fact, it wasn't even close. Morristown and Morris Township voters went to the polls on Tuesday, and by a nearly 3-1 margin approved the 2012-13 schools budget, 1,474 to 516. In the township, 1,138 voted for the budget while 401 voted against it. In Morristown, 336 were in favor while 115 voted "no." The $101,197,974 Morris School District budget will decrease Morristown taxes by $71 a year on a home assessed at the town average of $354,000. In Morris Township, a home assessed at the township average of $390,000 will see a $135 increase. The up-and-down disparity is due to a change in equalized property values between the two municipalities. It's the 18th year in a row the budget has passed in the Morris School …

First day of school will be Sept. 7.
The following announcement was made by Thomas J. Ficarra, Superintendent of Schools for the Morris School District: Like much of our community, several Morris School District schools have been affected by the aftermath of Hurricane Irene. Alexander Hamilton School suffered significant damage to the lower level and, as of today, Morristown High School and Hillcrest remained without electricity and Woodland and Normandy Park continued to experience sporadic power outages. In addition to power problems, water damage is a concern at Alexander Hamilton. Water has been found inside the boiler room and under the gym floor. It is possible that this area of the building may not be usable until renovation and repairs are completed. While our …

I graduated from MHS 20 years ago, when it was 120. I graduated with 130. So for those students who are more motivated knock your self out. It made the schools graduation rate look lower than it should have been. For those parents who disagree, well try teaching your kids to be more accountable for their actions and taking on more responsibility. Those of us that will hire your kids over the next…   more ›
