Morristown Shade Tree Commission was present to accept the proclamation certificate.
In April, Morristown's newly created Shade Tree Commission met for the first time, just before Arbor Day. Residents Tina Wahlstrom, Margaret Brady and Louise Witt all said such a commission would help the town recover trees lost in Hurricane Irene, the snowstorm of October 2012 and Hurricane Sandy. To keep the momentum going, Mayor Tim Dougherty gave a formal proclamation at Tuesday's council meeting marking April 26, 2013, as Arbor Day in Morristown. "The shade tree commission is going to oversee the canopy for our public trees, which is very important to our health and well being," he said. The Morristown Shade Tree Commission will hold it's first public meeting on April 16 at 7 p.m at Morristown Town Hall in room 201.
The Morristown Council unanimously approved an ordinance authorizing a Shade Tree Commission at its February meeting. Residents Tina Wahlstrom, Margaret Brady and Louise Witt all said such a commission would help the town recover trees lost in Hurricane Irene, the snowstorm of October 2012 and Hurricane Sandy. Residents say it will help replace trees damaged and destroyed by severe weather.

'Destruction of Public Property' section added to town police enforcement code on Tuesday
If a tree falls in Morristown, will anyone hear it? And, if they do, how much should the person pay who knocked it down? An ordinance passed Tuesday night by Town Council has for the first time brought a "Destruction of Public Property" section to the police enforcement code. Now, administration can now step in if needed on such matters, which includes damage to town-owned trees. As strictly a law enforcement issue, there is a higher burden of proof required for someone to be found guilty, said Business Administrator Michael Rogers. It seems like a great idea until the "new commission" tells you can't cut down a tree because it's historical. When your out of power for 14 days or you incur property damage, who will now shoulder the liabililty? You will of course.......................I think they call living in a forest "camping".   more ›
