On the article UPDATE 7 PM: JCP&L Restoration Timeline, Berkeley Heights Poll Change

ReplyHi all,
I just posted an update with information about Berkeley Heights schools, which will open tomorrow and Wednesday with an emergency schedule.
Also, go to your regular polling locations in Berkeley Heights tomorrow. If any polling locations are without power, the county is bringing in generators for the day.
Also, temperatures are dropping to the lower 30s, upper 20s tonight. If you still don't have power, like me, you should try to stay with family or friends, or go to one of the shelters open in the area. Warming shelters are still open at the New Providence Municipal Center, Berkeley Heights Town Hall and Mountainside Borough Hall. The Union County Regional Shelter is also open in Cranford, at the Community Center, 220 Walnut Ave. Residents planning to stay overnight should call ahead at (908) 709-7283 (press “2” for the shelter).
Stay warm!

ReplyHi everyone,
I'm going to try and answer some of your questions. Now some of this information is just my opinion, but I'm trying to give you all some answers and some peace of mind.
First, from what I remember from Irene and the October Snowstorm last year, the power companies sometimes had to knock out power all together in some areas of each town so they could make repairs to the affected neighborhoods. JCP&L's outage map is usually very accurate so I don't think it's a glitch with the system.
Also, Murray Hill is an unincorporated area that falls in Berkeley Heights and New Providence. From what I understand, Murray Hill shares the 07974 zip code with New Providence. Therefore, because JCP&L's outage map is organized by zip code, I believe any Murray Hill outages fall under the New Providence outage numbers.
As for the schools, the decision to close schools is made by the Superintendent of Schools. You can read more about school closings in New Providence here: http://www.npsd.k12.nj.us//Domain/51. I know New Providence builds a certain amount of "snow days" into their schedule, but those may have been used last week. While I can't speak for the school district administration, I think schools were opened today because three out of four buildings have power and if school were closed, those days would have to be made up at a later date.
I hope this information helps... feel free to contact me with any more questions!
Stay safe!

ReplyGas supply/open stations— huge issue right now. I'm hearing of stations opening around the county and closing as soon as they run out. The other Patch editors around Union County and I are working on a list of open stations, which we will try to keep as updated as possible. As of 2:30 p.m. today, Exxon on Springfield Avenue in New Providence is open right now, but there's a huge line. Plus, the Summit Patch Editor just told me that the Shell station on Morris Ave and Springfield in Summit has a steady flow.

ReplyThere is no word on whether there will be school tomorrow, Oct. 31, or not in New Providence, Berkeley Heights and Mountainside. However, given the significant damage in the area and across NJ and NY, I would be surprised if there is school tomorrow. Most residents do not have power, and countless roads are littered with downed trees, limbs and power lines. When I hear any updates from the school districts, I'll post it on the Patch homepage, as well as our Facebook and Twitter pages.
Remember everyone, stay off the roads - it's very dangerous out there and you may be hindering emergency personnel from doing their jobs. Please stay inside and stay safe!

ReplyThis Patch covers New Providence, Berkeley Heights and Mountainside in Union County, NJ. The photo above is of flooding on the New Providence/Chatham border after Irene hit the area last August. If you have any photos from Sandy, please feel free to add them to this article! Stay safe!

Hi everyone,
Thanks for sharing your thoughts.
Yes, the pedestrian, who is a Summit resident, was hit in the crosswalk. I updated this article today with additional information. The driver was arrested and charged with driving under the influence of alcohol and failure to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk. The resident's injuries are serious, but appear to be non-life threatening at this time. As I obtain more information from Summit Police, I will update you all.
Thanks!
